Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Mayer, Minnesota. When you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing is supported by testing centers across all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair are required for testing. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other testing needs.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests in drug screening has increased. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests instead of traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing appeals to employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, court systems, and probation clients due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days and uncheatable nature. However, for drug usage within the past 5 days, a urine test remains the accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and substance intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection range of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and hassle-free to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the perfect amount for initial tests and subsequent confirmations. For enhanced tests like EtG or when exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair is unattainable, a similar volume of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow for processing a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This stage involves ensuring the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and inputting any additional details not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary review for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive results require confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need a secondary verification.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, substances are drawn out from hair at a much lower concentration than with other techniques (like urine or saliva), making hair drug screening a more challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive specimen is cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests for drugs can identify usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Tough to manipulate: It's quite challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Offers chronological insight: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug intake over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot verify recent usage: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screens are usually more costly than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the level of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
