Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Maynard, Minnesota. Whether a hair drug or alcohol assessment is required, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with centers available across all U.S. cities to conduct hair evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head crown or body are necessary for testing. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, the drug testing landscape has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug assessments. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair testing over standard urine evaluations. Hair follicle tests attract those with zero-tolerance policies, judicial bodies, and individuals on probation due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed collections, and deterrence against tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain optimal for identifying use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a prolonged history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is an optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process checks that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs any necessary additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial quick assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be verified to be legally valid. Any samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening require an additional confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair in much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples with presumptive positives are washed as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasted with urine tests that have a shorter detection window.
  • Inability to cheat: Hair drug tests are challenging to counterfeit, leading to more reliable results.
  • Historical data: They reveal patterns of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug tests are typically more expensive than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle below the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Maynard, MN, hair follicle testing prevails over traditional urine tests by detecting drug use with unmatched precision and consistency. Although both methods serve as substance screening options, hair testing offers superior accuracy and dependability, identifying substance traces otherwise missed in urine tests. This advantage underscores its value for a foolproof substance detection process.

Extended Detection Window

Offering an Extended Detection Window of up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Maynard, MN receives recognition for providing a panoramic view of a person's drug utilization history. This method accommodates employers requiring phrasal solutions that surpass the temporal limitations of standard urine tests, offering longer-term substance history insights crucial for informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The robustness of hair follicle testing in Maynard, MN lies in its Resistance to Tampering. This testing method substantially mitigates the risks of sample alteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
