Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in McIntosh, Minnesota. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. With testing facilities in every city across the nation, we can conduct these tests efficiently. Ideally, you need hair of 1.5 to 2 inches length, but body hair can suffice. Our hair tests can detect substances like drugs and alcohol or can be tailored for specific testing needs.

More recently, hair follicle drug screenings have become increasingly popular for substance detection. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and addiction experts are opting for hair testing over traditional urine analyses. Companies with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under supervision favor hair testing because of its extended detection period, typically 90 days. This method is rigorously controlled and highly resistant to tampering, although for detecting drug use in the immediate past, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can present a detection timeframe for various substances extending up to roughly three months. This method is easy to administer, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprised of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp equates to 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screenings and confirmations. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests that exceed 10 panels, 150mg of hair is preferred. We advise weighing the sample with precision on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, a similar quantity of body hair can suffice. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other categories (facial, axillary, and so on).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further required entries not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid assessment of potential substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples showing preliminary positive results during Screening necessitate further Confirmation.

Should a sample register as preliminary positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), rendering hair drug testing as one of the more complex methodologies to execute.

Verification of any Screening positive outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All tentative positive samples undergo washing before the Confirmation process as warranted. The entire lab cycle, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocols and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use over a span reaching 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter timeline.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notably hard to tamper with, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: They offer a pattern of drug consumption rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take nearly 5-7 days post-use to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences may impact drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Often named "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp
