Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Medford, MN. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, you're in the right place, as we excel in this area. Our testing centers are spread across the nation, able to conduct hair tests efficiently. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary from your head or body for a valid sample. Analyze these tests for alcohol, drugs, ETG, or other bespoke testing options.

There's been a growing trend towards using hair follicle tests for drug screening in recent years. An increasing number of workplaces, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probation officers. A key advantage is the extended drug detection period, reaching up to 90 days, with a collection that is closely monitored and nearly foolproof against tampering. However, for recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust instrument for identifying substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair strands encapsulate a prolonged record of substance exposure by embedding biomarkers within their fibers. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal drug or alcohol consumption history for up to 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, enhanced panels, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent body hair sample may be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s framework. It involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, creating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing information that wasn’t included in the electronic custody documentation.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment to identify drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive results must be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a much lower concentration than in methods like urine or oral fluid testing, rendering hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that test positive initially are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to tamper with: It is notably difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, increasing the reliability of results.
  • Displays historical usage: It can outline a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
