Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Mendota, Minnesota. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have centers Nationwide that conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Hair analyses cover various drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized as needed.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more common among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals recently, replacing standard urine tests. It's favored by zero-tolerance employers, legal entities, and those on probation due to its extensive detection window of up to 90 days, supervised collection process, and difficulty to falsify. However, urine tests remain most precise for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair accumulates biomarkers within its strands as it grows, offering a comprehensive timeline of substance use. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol intake over a span that may reach three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the circumference of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides about 100 mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a 150 mg amount is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. If scalp hair isn’t an option, equivalent body hair may be substituted. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The processing in the lab for drug test results is comprised of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is first logged into the lab system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening initiates a preliminary check for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical approach for excluding drug consumption in most samples, positive findings necessitate confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples that screen positive nonetheless require a follow-up verification.

For samples showing positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Drugs are isolated from hair at far lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex technique to execute.

Positive screening outcomes are corroborated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potential positives undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. A review of the entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can register drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter time frame.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are very challenging to falsify, enhancing result reliability.
  • Supplies usage history: This method can reveal a timeline of drug use, beyond just current consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair characteristics like color and personal growth rate can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often known as "hair follicle tests," this test examines the strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
