Located in Murphy City, MN, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing is supported by centers nationwide, enabling efficient testing for any city. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is standard, suitable for analysis of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug assessment. Increasingly, employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are sought after by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and individuals on probation due to their extended detection time of up to 90 days, collecting samples under observation, making it almost impossible to alter results. However, urine tests remain the preferred choice for identifying recent usage within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair as it grows. Sampling hair near the scalp can reveal drug or alcohol presence for up to around 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp provides 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. 'Head hair' refers exclusively to scalp hair, while 'Body hair' encompasses all other hair types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four crucial stages comprise the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails incorporating a sample into a lab's protocol. This step verifies proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entries not already processed by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for potential drug use. It offers a cost-effective method to dismiss drug presence in most cases, though results must be confirmed for legal validity. Any samples indicating potential positivity in Screening necessitate further confirmation testing.

Should a sample indicate possible drug presence in Screening, additional hair is extracted and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), explaining the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of positive results is achieved through methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test positive preliminarily are cleansed prior to confirmation. The process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair tests identify drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests with shorter timelines.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair test is challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical insight: It reveals usage trends over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs generally appear in hair after 5-7 days from use.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being often labeled as "hair follicle tests", this assessment examines the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
