Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in New Munich, Minnesota. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing ensures accessibility through our nationwide centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. These tests are versatile, analyzing substances like drugs and alcohol/ETG or can be customized for specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for detecting drug use. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly choosing hair tests over urine tests. Used by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, these tests offer a longer detection period of up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are nearly foolproof. However, for use within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substance presence by encapsulating biomarkers within the matrix of the growing hair strand. If gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 90-day detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hairs (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analysis, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to collect 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested to measure the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair may be acquired. When referring to head hair, it specifically denotes scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial intake of a sample into a lab's system, ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical strategy to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires verification to be legally valid. Presumptive positive results from Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

Should a sample result presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair in far lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation following ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a reduced detection timeframe.
  • Resilient to deception: Attempting to deceive a hair drug test proves very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a timeline of substance use over several months, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs only become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the common terminology "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing triumphs over urine testing in New Munich, MN by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
