Located in Norcross, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in such tests with centers across every city in the nation ready to conduct them. Typically, you need to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body. Our tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized to your needs.

Over recent years, there's been an increasing shift towards using hair follicle tests for drug screening. Many companies, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation officers due to their long detection window, which can extend up to 90 days. Hair tests are directly observed, minimizing the chance of tampering, but for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol use. Hair functions as a repository of long-term alcohol and drug history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. With samples taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to 3 months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to collect, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair lock of around 200 strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the ideal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional analytes, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In cases where scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four integral steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial process where a sample is integrated into a lab's system. This process involves ensuring the sample’s seal and shipment were intact, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid verification for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to determining drug usage in most samples, an affirmative screen necessitates confirmatory testing for court validity. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

If the Screening phase yields a presumptive positive sample, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations markedly lower than those in other procedures (such as urine or oral fluid tests), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screen results is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are marked presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The overall laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to review according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can determine drug consumption for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • High resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to cheat, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Historical usage insight: It can reveal a timeline of drug use, rather than focusing solely on recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Limited to detecting past use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than alternate drug assessment methods.
  • Impact of individual factors: Variations such as hair color and growth rate can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Despite the common reference to "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself and not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
