In Norseland, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug assessments. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in hair testing with facilities all over the nation equipped to conduct such exams. A hair length of approximately 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body suffices for these tests, capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing is an increasingly common method for drug screening. It's favored by employers, the judiciary, and substance abuse experts as an alternative to urine analysis. Those advocating zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and individuals under probation often opt for hair tests. Their advantage lies in a vastly extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days, and conducted through monitored collection, ensuring integrity. However, for identifying drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tough to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for evaluating and confirming. For EtG, additional tests, and/or beyond 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, chest, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key procedures in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This process ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not furnished by a digital chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly way to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires validation to be acceptable in legal settings. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and ready for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for as much as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a pattern of substance use over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It takes nearly 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Outcome variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
