Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Park Rapids, Minnesota. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is required, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, with facilities available nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Our hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored testing services.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests are being used more often for drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over the usual urine tests. Suitable for those with zero-tolerance policies, the primary advantage of hair tests is their long detection spans, up to 90 days, using a monitored collection method that's hard to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests are still preferred for precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of drug and alcohol use by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can indicate drug or alcohol intake over a nearly 3-month period. Collection is straightforward, tampering is somewhat challenging, and it is easy to ship.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (about the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. 'Head hair' refers exclusively to scalp hair. 'Body hair' includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test follows four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This process entails confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening generally offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptively positive Screening samples require additional confirmation.

If a sample exhibits a presumptively positive result during Screening, further hair is sourced from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, the extraction of drugs from hair occurs at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo necessary washing prior to confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Conveys historical data: This method can demonstrate a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Results variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth could influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing shines over urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy in Park Rapids, MN. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair tests reveal drug history up to 90 days. Their longer detection window, combined with their accuracy, offers a more reliable insight into an individual's substance use, surpassing the capability of traditional urine testing methods for comprehensive assessments.

Extended Detection Window

In Park Rapids, MN, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing is invaluable. It provides a detailed overview of substance use over up to 90 days. This long window allows employers to understand an employee's drug use history more effectively than short-term tests, facilitating better recruitment and monitoring decisions by revealing extended patterns rather than isolated instances of drug use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Park Rapids, MN, significantly mitigate the risk of adulteration, offering dependable and authoritative results. The collection process's nature is inherently tamper-resistant, as altering hair samples is challenging. This ensures the credibility of the results, making them a trustworthy choice for employers and organizations determined to implement fair and rigorous testing practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
