In Philbrook, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Those requiring tests for drug or alcohol presence can rely on our expertise in hair testing, accessible through our centers across all cities in the nation. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is needed. Our tests can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific hair testing needs.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has risen in recent years for drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are favoring hair tests over standard urine analyses. Hair follicle tests serve employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation, due to their long detection period of up to 90 days, the observed collection process, and their resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the more accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances through the encapsulation of biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG or other additions, as well as tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar amount of body hair may be obtained. When referring to head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in processing a drug test result in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introductory handling of a sample within a lab's system. This involves confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid examination for substance misuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Any samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

In instances where a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial specimen and set for Extraction. Herein, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to different methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing identifies drug usage for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenging to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Supplies historical data: It shows a timeline of drug usage over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Philbrook, MN, the advantages become clear. Hair testing outshines urine testing with superior detection accuracy and reliability. These tests can unearth drug use patterns better than urine tests.

Urine tests, typically limited to recent drug use, lack the extensive history that hair testing provides. This longer analysis window ensures a thorough examination of the subject's habits, crucial for comprehensive assessments.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Philbrook, MN, benefit from hair follicle testing due to its extensive detection window, spanning up to 90 days. This allows a complete overview of an individual’s substance use history.

The comprehensive analysis surpasses the short-term insights provided by urine tests, enabling employers to make well-informed decisions. This longer timeframe aids in identifying patterns that could be masked by other testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Philbrook, MN, offer a tamper-resistant solution, significantly minimizing the risk of sample adulteration. Their reliability is unmatched, providing unquestionable results.

Traditional testing methods can be susceptible to deceit, but hair testing's collection and testing protocols reduce fraudulent attempts, ensuring stakeholders receive authentic data to base their decisions on.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
