Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Prosit, Minnesota. For anyone needing a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is specialized in hair testing with centers available nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can analyze for various substances including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In the last few years, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing processes. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists increasingly prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests suit employers with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair tests lies in their extended detection window, often reaching up to 90 days, and the collection is supervised, making evasion nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for drug detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained a reputation as an effective instrument for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair can capture biomarkers within the strands of the developing hair, providing a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake. When collected near the scalp, hair can deliver an approximate three-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extras, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is processed into a laboratory system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an introductory rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug consumption in most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are recovered from hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo a washing process before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use as far back as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty in cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Provides historical insight: It outlines a drug use pattern over time, as opposed to indicating only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
