In Randall, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers located in all cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient for testing. Hair tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG or other needs.

The trend of using hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly preferring hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those monitored while on probation favor these tests for their longer detection windows that typically span up to 90 days, collected under observation, and their near impossibility of tampering. Nevertheless, a urine test remains the most accurate for drug use from the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken from close to the scalp, hair can offer an approximately three-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the circumference of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, an equivalent sample of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the early processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This phase involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening mandate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample preliminarily test positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive results from the screening phase is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that are presumptively positive are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter period of detection.
  • Resistance to deception: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, contributing to more accurate findings.
  • Offers observational data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
