Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Raymond, Minnesota. Whether you need hair drug or alcohol tests, our centers are nationwide and specialize in hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other customized options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now often request them instead of standard urine tests. These tests support zero-tolerance drug policies due to their longer detection period—up to 90 days—and observed collection process, making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly acknowledged as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. By retaining markers in its developing strands, hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug intake. When taken near the scalp, hair can be indicative of alcohol and drug presence for a period reaching up to roughly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-on tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, collecting an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. When we speak of head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step confirms that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes a preliminary fast check for substance abuse. Although Screening is economical for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal validity. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

For samples testing positive at the Screening phase, more hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at lower concentrations than other approaches (like urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is audited under both CAP's (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • High integrity: Hair drug tests are challenging to cheat, increasing the reliability of results.
  • Historical insight: Offers a timeline of drug usage rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No immediate detection: Drugs appear in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
