Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Red Wing, Minnesota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing offers expertise in hair tests and operates testing centers across all cities in the nation that can conduct a hair test. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other analyses.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Many businesses, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now mandate a hair drug test over a standard urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, court systems, and those on probation often utilize hair follicle tests, as they offer a considerably longer detection period—up to 90 days—collected through an observational process, making it much harder to manipulate. Nonetheless, for detecting recent substance use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as a crucial approach to identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair fibers encapsulate biomarkers as the strand grows, offering a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use. By obtaining hair near the scalp, one can achieve a detection timeframe of up to around three months for various substances. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, it is relatively resistant to tampering, and it is convenient to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands from the scalp, equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil, will yield approximately 100mg of hair, which is ideal for initial screening and subsequent verification. For analyses like EtG, additional tests, and panels exceeding 10, it's advisable to collect 150mg of the specimen. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended to measure the sample's weight. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it's exclusively about scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab handling of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample enters the lab's system. This step confirms that the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for potential drug abuse. This stage, being cost-effective, mainly rules out drug consumption for most samples, but a positive result here requires verification for it to be court-admissible. Samples showing positive results in Screening need further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in urine or oral fluid methodologies, making hair drug screening a challenging method.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage over a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are significantly more resistant to cheating, which enhances the reliability of the results.
  • Historical insight: This testing method can reveal drug consumption patterns over time, not merely recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually pricier compared to alternative methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Factors such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
