Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Rich Valley, Minnesota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we at Accredited Drug Testing focus on hair testing with facilities available in cities across the nation to conduct these tests. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or from the body may be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing options.

In the past few years, there has been an increased preference for using a hair follicle drug test to conduct drug testing. Many employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts are preferring hair drug tests over the typical urine test. Hair follicle drug testing appeals to employers with strict no-drug policies as well as to courts and probationary individuals. A key advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its extended detection period for drug use, which can be as long as 90 days. The testing process is meticulously observed, rendering it nearly impossible to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the preferred choice for identifying drug use within the preceding 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant tool for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by encapsulating biomarkers in the growing hair strand's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to falsify, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is sparse, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, this pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four crucial stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This involves confirming the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-effective measure to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in court. Any samples that test positive presumptively in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive presumptively during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly reduced concentration than other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers past use data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not simply recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur greater costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
