Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Richwood, Minnesota. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, available through Nationwide centers in each city. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed for most assessments. These tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, the trend in substance testing has increasingly leaned towards hair follicle examinations. Employers, legal entities, and addiction care professionals often favor hair screenings over the traditional urine method. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers maintaining zero-tolerance policies, judicial requirements, and probationary monitoring. Their main advantage is the prolonged window of detection for drug use, generally covering up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and resistant to manipulation. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug consumption. When sampled near the scalp, it can indicate alcohol and drug presence for up to roughly three months. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp equals 100mg, the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we're specifically talking about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a lab system. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use in most cases, any positive screen must be confirmed for courtroom admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening do need additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Sustained detection window: Hair tests for drugs can detect usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter range.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a longitudinal pattern of drug usage rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Can't identify recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although they're often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
