Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Riverland, Minnesota. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we're experts in hair testing, with facilities in every city nationwide ready to conduct these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. Our hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and include custom options.

Hair follicle drug testing has recently become more common for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over urine tests due to their zero-tolerance policies. Hair follicle tests are primarily valued for their extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, the observed collection process, and their resistance to tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain superior for identifying drug use within the prior 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Interpreting hair examinations has emerged as an influential method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair strands encapsulate a timeline of substance intake by embedding markers in the fibers as they grow. When sourced near the roots, hair samples can potentially reflect a substance use history extending up to approximately 90 days for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and can be easily dispatched for analysis.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil in size) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and confirmation. For evaluations like EtG, additional assessments, and/or testing involving more than ten panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. When scalp hair is mentioned, it specifically pertains to hair from the scalp. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory drug test analysis includes four fundamental stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample’s initial incorporation into the lab’s records. This step verifies that the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any unfinished data entry not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary rapid evaluation for drugs. While it’s an economical approach to exclude drug presence in many specimens, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be considered valid in a legal context. Any sample that returns a presumptive positive from Screening must undergo secondary verification.

In scenarios where a specimen tests presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is sectioned from the primary sample to prepare for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Any preliminary positive results are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation if required. A comprehensive review of the laboratory procedures from Accessioning through to Confirmation is conducted, adhering to standards under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can trace substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which monitor a shorter period.
  • Reliability: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more accurate outcomes.
  • Chronological consumption data: The test can outline a pattern of drug use over several months, unlike tests that only detect recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Detecting drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days from use.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings tend to be pricier than alternative testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent outcomes: Differences due to hair color and individual hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
