Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Riverton, Minnesota. If you require a drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is used. Hair testing can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly featured hair follicle examinations. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are popular among zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation officers. A key advantage of hair testing is its extensive detection window, covering up to 90 days, with collection under observation, and it's challenging to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a formidable method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers, hair offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake. When collected near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug usage for a period extending up to about three months. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests including EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be taken. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system, which involves confirming that the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial cursory examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective means to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening demand further verification.

If a sample is flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is collected from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at far lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a briefer detection span.
  • High resistance to tampering: It is notably challenging to alter a hair drug test, enhancing the results' credibility.
  • Reflects historical usage: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Detecting drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Disparities in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
