Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair drug testing in Rosewood, Minnesota. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, we are hair testing specialists with centers across the nation, adept at conducting such tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown of the head or body is enough. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized substances.

Recently, drug testing procedures increasingly feature hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer these tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests suit employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial bodies, and those on probation. A significant advantage is detecting drug use up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that's difficult to cheat. However, for identifying recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record for drugs and alcohol by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can provide an approximately 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch section composed of roughly 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages of laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's workflow. This involves verifying the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that test presumptive positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before proceeding to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, which enhances the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: The commonly used term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer as the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
