Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Saginaw, Minnesota. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available in every city across the Nation. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body, hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more favored method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often prefer hair tests over standard urine analyses. These tests are ideal for zero-tolerance policies, probation requirements, and judicial decisions. Hair follicle testing offers a longer detection window, up to 90 days, is collected under supervision, and is highly resistant to tampering. However, urine tests remain preferred for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a reliable method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. As hair develops, it captures biomarkers within its fibers, offering a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use. Sampling hair near the scalp allows for a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A strand length of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 pieces of hair (equivalent to a #2 pencil), yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for initial testing and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is entered into a lab's system, confirming proper sealing and delivery, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and inputting any required data outside an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening is a preliminary check for substance presence. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug use in most cases, any positive findings must be confirmed to hold up in legal settings. Samples testing as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples showing presumed positive results in Screening, additional hair from the original sample undergoes preparation for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing a complex process.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. Samples with presumed positive findings are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can reveal drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter timeframe.
  • Low chance of evasion: Cheating a hair drug screening is notably difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers usage patterns: It can show patterns of drug use over an extended duration, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Detectability in hair requires approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug screens typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this analysis evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Saginaw, MN, proves superior to traditional urine tests in several ways. The benefits of hair testing are apparent, with its longer detection periods and its inability to be easily cheated. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
