In Saint Anthony, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair testing, we provide numerous centers across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, hair from the crown or body is required, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, to analyze substances like drugs and alcohol/ETG or conduct other customized tests.

Recently, the frequency of hair follicle drug testing has increased among employers, courts, and addiction specialists favoring hair tests over urine tests. Used by companies with strict no-drug policies and by judicial entities, hair tests offer detection windows extending up to 90 days. These tests are performed under supervision, making them hard to manipulate, though for suspected drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely acknowledged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a chronological archive of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair testing can reveal alcohol and drug use up to about a 90-day timeline. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch lock consisting of approximately 200 hairs (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg, which is perfect for initial and verification testing. For EtG, optional extras, and/or assessments over 10 panels, it's suggested to use 150mg. Measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale is advisable. If scalp hair is absent, a proportional amount of body hair can be used. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing procedure in a laboratory setting involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is integrated into the lab’s system. This involves checking the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it's a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, any positive screening requires confirmation to be considered valid in court. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a confirming test.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive in the Screening step, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at much lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair screening one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive requires GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All such samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited in accordance with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating on a hair test is highly challenging, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Historical view: It provides a history of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the concentration of drug residues.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the scalp's follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
