Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Saint Francis, Minnesota. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. It typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug assessment. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair analysis over the traditional urine examination. Businesses with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals often utilize hair tests. The primary advantage is a prolonged detection window of about 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. Nonetheless, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine exams remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and other substances by encasing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection duration for substances. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, extras, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a proportionate amount of body hair can be gathered. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial processing of a sample into the lab's system. This entails ensuring that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening embodies an initial swift inspection for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage from numerous samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening exceptionally challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug utilization for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Resistant to adulteration: It is exceedingly difficult to alter a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over an interval, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
