Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Saint Peter, Minnesota. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, we have centers nationwide ready to conduct necessary analyses. With 1.5 to 2 inches of hair required from your head or body, tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing options.

Hair follicle testing is becoming a common method in recent years for drug assessments. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly choosing it over urine tests. Used by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers, hair tests offer a lengthy detection window up to 90 days, are watched during collection, and nearly impossible to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the best for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the evolving hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use within roughly a 3-month timeframe. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil), and nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to weight the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. The term "head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Process

The drug test outcome involves four primary procedural steps in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a specimen within a lab's system. It comprises ensuring that the specimen was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening provides an initial swift assessment for substance abuse. It serves as a cost-efficient method to exclude drug consumption in most specimens; however, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples flagged positive in Screening mandate additional confirmation.

Should a specimen test positive in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the primary sample for Preparation for Extraction. Drugs are derived from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed in alignment with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a reduced detection span.
  • Hard-to-manipulate: Hair drug evaluations possess a high difficulty level in terms of manipulation, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historic data provision: It offers a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapacity to detect recent ingestion: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair evaluations tend to be more costly compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the procedure targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
