Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sedan, Minnesota. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, we excel in hair testing, with centers across all cities nationwide capable of performing these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Lately, drug testing strategies have increasingly relied on hair follicle analyses. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These exams suit organizations with zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and individuals on probation. The key advantage of these tests is their ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, using a supervised collection process, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for drug use detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and substance intake by trapping markers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. In discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair explicitly. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in the lab involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample into the lab's system. This step entails ensuring that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, attaching a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick test for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical means to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be court-eligible. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the main specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening a very complex methodology to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used for confirming any positive screening outcome. All samples with a presumptive positive screening are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criterion and conforms to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can spot drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty to falsify: It's quite tough to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides use history: It can present a usage pattern over time, beyond just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs become measurable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other drug test types.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the underlying hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
