Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug examinations in Shafer, Minnesota. For anyone in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair assessments, with facilities available in cities Nationwide to conduct the hair examination. Generally, you require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, although body hair can also be used. Hair assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle drug examinations. Many companies, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for a hair analysis over the typical urine examination. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation commonly use hair follicle tests. These tests primarily offer a substantially longer detection window for drug use—up to 90 days—captured in a monitored collection, making it exceptionally challenging to deceive. Yet, for detecting substance use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair assessments has emerged as an instrumental method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as an archival record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they develop. When harvested near the scalp, hair samples can reveal usage up to a three-month period for alcohol and drug detection. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to send off for analysis.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for initial screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is not an option, a comparable amount of body hair may be used instead. References to head hair specify scalp hair exclusively, while body hair encompasses other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four central stages in the lab handling of a drug test outcome, which include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the primary integration of a specimen into the laboratory system. This process entails confirming that the specimen was properly sealed and dispatched, creating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any needed data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. Although cost-efficient for ruling out substance use in most cases, a positive screen requires further confirmation to be recognized in legal scenarios. Samples indicating presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation procedure.

In instances of a presumptive positive result from Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drug elements are derived from hair at considerably lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis the most complex to administer.

Confirmation of any positive screening output is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples flagged as presumptive positive are cleansed as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can identify drug intake for a duration of up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests offering a more limited detection range.
  • Difficult to bypass: It is exceedingly challenging to circumvent a hair drug test, thus enhancing the reliability of outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: This method illustrates patterns of drug usage over time rather than pinpointing recent activity solely.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: A span of approximately 5-7 days is required for drugs to manifest within hair samples.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence the level of drug metabolites detected in hair specimens.

Note: Although the term "hair follicle tests" is frequently used, the evaluation targets the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
