Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Spring Hill, Minnesota. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing. With centers scattered across cities Nationwide, we can conduct a hair test easily. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has grown in usage for drug assessments. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer this over the conventional urine test. Employers with strict no-drug policies, the judicial system, and probationary individuals utilize hair follicle tests. The extended detection period of up to 90 days and the observed collection process make it tough to tamper with results. Yet, for substance usage within five days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer an extended timeline of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 90-day period for detecting alcohol and drug usage. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's best to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. In instances where scalp hair is not present, an equivalent volume of body hair could be used. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair only, whereas body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The four pivotal phases in handling a drug test result at the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes its initial entry into a laboratory’s system. This entails confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry tasks not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary swift assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug use on the majority of specimens, a positive outcome in screening must be substantiated to hold up in court. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this procedure, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive findings is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in accordance with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug analyses can spot drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection timeline.
  • Challenging to evade: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: Offers insights into usage patterns over an interval, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs typically take about 5-7 days to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual examination focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
