Accredited Drug Testing provides in-depth hair follicle drug screening in Spring Lake Park, Minnesota. For those seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise lies in hair analysis with locations across every city nationwide adept at conducting these tests. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is necessary for sampling. Hair assessments can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made testing choices.

Recently, the use of hair follicle tests for drug analysis has surged. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now opt for hair tests over typical urine samples. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation individuals primarily utilize hair follicle testing. Its advantage lies in detecting drug use over a span of up to 90 days, requiring direct collection, and being effectively tamper-proof. Yet, for detection of drug use within five days, urine tests remain highly precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is identified as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol utilization. Hair holds a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advise weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test follows four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This step ensures the sample was securely sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any added data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are eluted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Verification of any positive screening outcome utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenge to alter results: It is exceedingly tough to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It shows a trend of drug consumption over time, not just current use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differing rates can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
