The collection of hair samples is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A sample of 1.5 inches from roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the perfect portion for examination and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, equivalent body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean specifically scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the lab process for generating a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is processed into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional required information not supplied by a digital chain of custody system.

The Screening phase is a preliminary and rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage in many samples, positive results need confirmation to be considered valid in legal contexts. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is drawn from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In the Extraction phase, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Positive Screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025 standards.
