Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle tests for drug detection in St. Joseph, Minnesota. Whenever a hair test for drugs or alcohol is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels as a specialist in hair testing. We offer testing centers in every city across the country that can conduct hair tests. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be utilized. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more regular method for substance detection. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists increasingly favor hair drug tests over urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are ideal for employers with strict drug policies, legal entities, or those under probation. The main advantage is its extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, observed during collection, and it's resistant to tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests are more precise for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-lasting record of alcohol and other drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the structural elements of the growing hair. When hair is sourced near the scalp, it can offer up to a roughly 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hairs (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg hair sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the introductory processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This step encompasses ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not provided via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial quick evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use for the majority of samples, a positive SCREEN result must be confirmed to be court-eligible. All samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation procedure.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is taken from the original sample and made ready for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations as compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is among the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any confirmed positive result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes a washing stage prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection windows.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a timeline of drug use over an extended period, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It requires 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in St. Joseph, MN is evident through its superior detection efficiency. Hair tests, unlike urine, unveil substance use over a longer duration, significantly enhancing accuracy. Traditional urine tests fall short in this area, offering only a limited view of recent usage, whereas hair tests detect up to 90 days of substance history.

Employers find this valuable when enforcing drug-free policies, as it provides a comprehensive view into an individual's drug use, enabling more informed and responsible decision-making. The reliability of hair testing ensures a higher standard in corporate and legal contexts alike.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
