Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Stacy, Minnesota. For those in need of hair-based drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert, with facilities across the country capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be collected. Various hair tests are available, including for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other bespoke testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. This testing is increasingly favored by employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists, replacing the traditional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation individuals prioritize hair tests. A significant advantage is its prolonged detection time for drug use—up to 90 days—with observed sample collection making it hard to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an invaluable resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, offering an extended account of alcohol and drug use. When taken near the scalp, hair reveals a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for analysis and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It is suggested to determine the weight of the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair types (including facial and axillary hair, etc.).

Process Summary

There are four key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the first phase of integrating a sample into the laboratory's records. This step involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drug presence. While it is cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive finding needs confirmation to hold up in legal proceedings. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is positively identified in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than seen in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which explains the difficulty of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed as required before confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is rigorously reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use over a span of 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Shows historical usage: It can illustrate a drug usage pattern over time, beyond just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Delayed detection: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are often pricier compared to other drug-testing strategies.
  • Result variance: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can affect the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly described as "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
