In Swan River, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, we've established centers nationwide to facilitate these exams. Having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body typically suffices. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing options.

Over the years, hair follicle testing has gained traction in drug assessments. Employers, judicial systems, and substance misuse experts often prefer this method over traditional urine exams. Ideal for employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation, its advantage is a 90-day drug use detection period, conducted under observation and challenging to manipulate. However, for drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Analyzing hair samples is increasingly recognized as a dynamic method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers, reflecting an extended history of substance use. When procured close to the scalp, they offer a detection period spanning up to three months for various substances. Collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and facilitates easy shipment.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 strands (approximately the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp weighs about 100mg, fitting the optimal criteria for screening and verification. For EtG extensions and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. It's advisable to measure the sample weight using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The core procedures in laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage, where a sample is logged into the laboratory system. This process ensures the sample's seal and shipment are valid, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an initial, rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although cost-effective for negating drug use in most cases, any positive screening result must be confirmed for legal proceedings. Presumptive positive samples in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If Screening indicates a sample is preliminarily positive, additional hair from the initial batch is selected and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other mediums (e.g., urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of a positive Screening result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Positive samples are cleansed before undergoing confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair analyses capture drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests offering shorter detection times.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Attempts to manipulate results are notably challenging, enhancing the credibility of the findings.
  • Provides historical data: It delivers insights into drug usage patterns over time rather than merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: The expense is typically higher for hair analyses compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Attributes such as hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
