In Swift Falls, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, our facilities span all cities nationwide, ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. These tests detect drugs and alcohol/ETG, among other personalized options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method to identify drug use recently. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now often prefer this method over the traditional urine test. It's embraced by organizations with stringent drug-free policies and by legal entities. The major advantage of hair testing is its ability to detect drug use over approximately 90 days, utilizing an observable collection process, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, when assessing recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When gathered near the scalp, it can indicate up to a roughly 3-month detection span for alcohol and other drugs. It is easy to gather hair samples, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal sample size for assessment and validation. For EtG, additional testing, and for tests surpassing 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler's scale. If head hair is absent, a similar amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other varieties (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s database. This involves checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry that might not be covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid evaluation for illicit substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be permissible in court. All samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the specimen and set for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests a challenging approach to perform.

Positive Screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a briefer detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It shows a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as “hair follicle tests”, the analysis actually targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair follicle tests to urine tests in Swift Falls, MN, reveals the former's superior detection accuracy. Hair drug testing offers a broader window for identifying drug use compared to traditional urine tests, which often only reflect recent substance intake. For employers and legal authorities, the comprehensive visibility into an individual's drug history is invaluable.

Extended Detection Window

In Swift Falls, MN, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days. This long-term visibility gives a thorough overview of an individual's past substance use, assisting employers in making informed hiring or disciplinary decisions. By capturing this extended history, hair tests provide a more detailed snapshot of potential drug use patterns compared to other testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Swift Falls, MN, is a tamper-resistant method ensuring reliable results. Due to the nature of the sample and its collection process, it's nearly impossible to alter or mask the results. This secure method protects the integrity of the testing process, providing assurance of accurate and trustworthy outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
