Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing at our Tamarack, Minnesota location. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide that can conduct these examinations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair can be tested. Hair analysis options include substance, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair assessments.

Recently, the implementation of substance testing has increasingly integrated hair follicle analyses. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair tests over standard urine screenings. Hair follicle assessments are critical for employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, judiciary realms, and probation monitoring. Their key advantage is an extended detection span for substances, generally up to 90 days, administered through supervised collection, and resistant to manipulation. Nonetheless, urine tests continue to be preferred for detecting recent use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fiber of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and conveniently shipped.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (close to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, or those beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent body hair amount may be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four key stages in lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning processes a sample into a lab's system through initial handling. Verification of proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not executed by an electronic chain of custody system are all part of this phase.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While it's a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, a screen that's positive must undergo confirmation for it to be court-admissible. Presumptive positives require follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive post-Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of conducting hair drug tests.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed in confirming any positive results from screening. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The total lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus making outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: These tests can indicate a sequence of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to reveal recent use: Roughly 5-7 days are needed for drugs to show up in hair tests.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Tamarack, MN, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine testing due to its superior accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis offers a more thorough detection, capturing a wider history of usage. This empowers employers with more substantial data to make informed decisions. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
