Located in Taunton, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug screenings. Whether it's for drug or alcohol detection, our specialists utilize hair testing and offer this service nationwide. For optimal results, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is ideal. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized as needed.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent years for screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now often select it over traditional urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, legal situations, and probationary monitoring, its main advantage is detecting drug use for up to 90 days. While nearly foolproof, urine tests remain best for recent 5-day drug usage detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands embed biomarkers within their fibers, offering a prolonged record of substance usage. When extracted near the scalp, hair can indicate substance use over an approximate three-month span. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A strand sample of 1.5 inches, roughly 200 hairs (the thickness of a #2 pencil), cut nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, the optimal amount for testing. For EtG, additional screenings, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, similar body hair may be substituted. "Head hair" denotes scalp hair exclusively, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Breakdown

The essential processes in lab analysis of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the sample's entry into the lab system. It verifies proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts an initial drug-use check. While cost-efficient for ruling out most samples, positive results require confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening need further confirmation.

Presumptive positives in Screening lead to more hair extraction for the initial sample for further preparation. This stage extracts drugs at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis notably complex.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All positive samples are cleaned before confirmation, ensuring accuracy. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is governed by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests detect substances for up to 90 days, unlike the shorter detection spans in urine tests.
  • High test integrity: Cheating a hair test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical substance use insight: Offers a timeline of drug usage, rather than recent activities alone.

Drawbacks:

  • Delayed detectability: Drugs become traceable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Results variability: Hair color and personal hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
