Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Togo, Minnesota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you require, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist in hair testing, offering testing centers in all major cities Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is sufficient. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, the approach to drug testing increasingly involves a hair follicle drug test. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are favoring hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are employed by organizations with zero tolerance for drug use policies, the judiciary system, and for individuals on probation. Their primary advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, obtained through an observed collection method, making them nearly foolproof. However, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, a urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and other substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, a hair sample can provide an approximately 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair samples are straightforward to collect, rather resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair—ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in the lab includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial process of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary analysis for abuse substances. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use for most samples, a screen showing positive must undergo confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need an additional confirmation step.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples showing presumptive positive results receive a wash before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and meets the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection period.
  • Hard to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal drug use patterns over time, rather than simply indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not able to detect recent use: It typically takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences may impact the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Togo, MN, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing due to its superior detection capability. Hair tests detect drug use with greater accuracy and over a longer period, offering employers a more reliable testing solution.

While urine tests have been standard, the longer detection window and enhanced reliability of hair follicle testing make it the preferred choice for stringent drug policies and requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
