Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Vermillion, Minnesota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, whether from the head or body, and these tests can include drug, alcohol/ETG, or personalized screenings.

In the past few years, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has grown in the drug testing field. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals demand this over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, probationary individuals, and courts prefer hair tests for their extensive detection window of up to 90 days and the difficulty to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying drug use within recent days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a timeline for the use of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair that is growing. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer up to a three-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional parameters, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we talk about head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result, namely Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing phase where a sample is incorporated into a lab’s system. It includes confirming that the specimen was properly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for drug abuse detection. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to negate drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be substantiated to be valid in court. Every sample that tests presumptively positive in Screening needs an additional confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptively positive results in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen to prepare for Extraction. During this step, drugs are removed from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive detection in Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples yielding presumptive positive results undergo a cleaning process before confirmation, as necessary. The complete laboratory evaluation from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a limited detection window.
  • Cheating is difficult: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring that the results are more reliable.
  • Displays historical data: It can show a timeline of drug use over a period, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing overshadow urine tests in Vermillion, MN? Hair testing boasts a superior detection range, capturing drug use from up to three months prior. Urine tests, while useful, typically reflect only recent consumption. Hair analysis provides a reliable substance history, invaluable to employers seeking data on longer-term usage.

The robust nature of hair testing significantly reduces the likelihood of manipulation, leading to more reliable outcomes compared to urine testing. In scenarios where accuracy is crucial, hair testing is the standout option.

Extended Detection Window

Hair testing in Vermillion, MN gives a prolonged view of drug use, with the capability to detect substances used in the past 90 days. For employers, this means gaining insightful information about an employee's substance history. This extended detection window equips companies with a comprehensive understanding that short-term tests can't offer.

Employers can effectively assess the long-term habits of candidates, ensuring only suitable individuals are selected. Hair testing’s ability to look back over months rather than days provides a thorough profile of substance use behaviors.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing significantly mitigates the risk of tampering in Vermillion, MN. The collection method and analysis make it nearly impossible to adulterate samples, ensuring the integrity of results. Unlike other methods susceptible to manipulation, hair tests offer unbeatable reliability.

The inability to alter results leads to greater trust in the outcomes, enhancing their credibility. This uncompromised reliability supports decisions made by employers, legal authorities, and administrators.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
