Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Villard, Minnesota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we specialize in this field and have facilities Nationwide that conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is necessary for testing. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored with other testing options.
Recently, drug testing has increasingly focused on hair follicle methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, legal systems, and probationary contexts. The main advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection window, covering up to 90 days. It's collected under supervision, minimizing potential cheating. However, for detecting recent use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

When you're searching for hair drug testing near me or hair drug testing locations, we provide a simple and convenient process to find a drug and alcohol testing location near you that is certified to provide all of your drug and alcohol testing needs.
Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding markers in the strands of hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month period of substance use for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.
A sample measuring 1.5 inches from around 200 hairs (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for testing purposes. For tests such as EtG, additional panels, or those over 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, body hair in a similar amount can be taken. "Head hair" specifies only scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types like facial or axillary hair.
Process Overview
The laboratory analysis of a drug test involves four main processes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning starts with integrating a specimen into the lab’s system. This involves checking that the sample was securely sealed and properly transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry needs not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening is a quick initial test for drug presence. Though Screening economically rules out drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires detailed verification for legal acceptance. Any samples that test positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.
If Screening suggests a positive result, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower levels than in alternate methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair testing one of the most challenging techniques.
Positive results in the screening are confirmed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples marked as presumptive positives are washed if necessary. From Accessioning through to Confirmation, the process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Note: Though often named "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle below the scalp.

The joint meeting of the Society of Hair Testing (SoHT) and the Italian Group of Forensic Toxicologists (GTFI) was organized in Verona, June 8–10, 2022, and hosted by the Legal Medicine team of the Verona University Hospital, directed by Franco Tagliaro together with Federica Bortolotti and Rossella Gottardo.
It served as a prominent platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, facilitating groundbreaking advancements in hair testing and analysis. In this special issue of Drug Testing and Analysis, we aim to showcase the remarkable manuscripts presented at this significant event, shedding light on the latest research and highlighting the future directions in this field.
Novel Analytical Techniques: The Verona meeting witnessed the unveiling of cutting-edge analytical techniques, offering enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and accuracy for drug testing. Remarkable advancements in sample preparation, detection, and identification of drug compounds have been presented. The manuscripts in this section presented novel approaches, such as multianalyte methods and on-line preparation which can enable rapid analysis and improve thorough forensic investigations.
Biomarkers and Pharmacokinetics: The identification and validation of reliable biomarkers and pharmacokinetic studies are fundamental aspects of drug testing and analysis. The impact of hair treatments on the oxidation/decomposition of drugs in hair was also explored, as the long-term fate of drugs incorporated in the keratin matrix. Furthermore, the SoHT meeting in Verona featured research on the identification and quantification of alcohol abuse biomarkers, their stability, and their correlation with exposure and other biomarkers.
Forensic Applications and Interpretation: One of the vital objectives of hair testing is its application in forensic investigations and legal proceedings. The SoHT meeting in Verona emphasized the significance of rigorous interpretation of analytical results and the need for standardized protocols. Manuscripts in this section present advancements in forensic toxicology, and have explored the challenges posed by emerging designer drugs and strategies to combat their proliferation. The pitfalls encountered when the exogenous/endogenous nature of a substance is questioned were presented and discussed. The special issue presents also manuscripts that delve into the ethical implications of drug testing in drug facilitated sexual assaults.
Clinical Applications of hair testing are witnessed by the insight on environmental tobacco smoke exposure, assessed by hair analysis in a population of students and the study of in utero-exposure to drugs of abuse through neonatal hair analysis. Exposure to drugs was also important in cases of child abuse/neglect, when the clinical purpose of hair testing merge with its forensic applications.
The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed, and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
