Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Vining, Minnesota. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has a focus on hair testing, and we provide these services in every city across the nation, including hair tests. Normally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is needed. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or various tailored options.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has increasingly become the method of choice for drug testing. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are popular among employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The main advantage is the longer detection window for drug use, often up to 90 days, through a witnessed collection process and are almost impossible to manipulate. However, for detection of recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of these substances by encasing biomarkers within its fibers. When harvested near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands, similar in size to a #2 pencil, taken closest to the scalp provides 100mg, the perfect sample for initial and confirmatory tests. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferred. It is advised to use a jeweler’s scale for specimen weight. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This procedure ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary swift check for drugs of abuse. Although it is a cost-effective approach for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screening outcome must be confirmed to be legally valid. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, more hair from the original specimen is prepared for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at a lesser concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing as the most challenging method to conduct.

Any positive screening result requires Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug exams provide up to a 90-day detection span, unlike urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It delivers a usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally incur higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
