Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings right in Wabasso, Minnesota. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we feature facilities in all cities nationwide to conduct these assessments. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head, although body hair can be used. Options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly become the preferred method for drug detection over recent years. Many businesses, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts favor hair tests over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation programs all employ these tests. Hair testing offers a long detection span, often up to 90 days, is observed during collection, and is hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain most effective for recent use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a longer-term record of these substances by capturing biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, it can detect alcohol and other drugs for up to three months. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send off for testing.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing about 200 hairs (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil's diameter) will typically weigh around 100mg, which is the preferred amount for analysis and validation. For tests targeting EtG, additional substances, or exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The process of generating a drug test result consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This step verifies that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes necessary data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment to check for drugs. Though cost-efficient for screening the majority of samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate secondary verification.

Should a sample return a positive indication during Screening, additional hairs from the original collection are used for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva tests), which is why hair drug testing is particularly complex.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used for confirming positive screenings. All samples that are presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation, if required. The full lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analysis can indicate drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Due to the difficulty in tampering with a hair test, outcomes are typically more reliable.
  • Provides usage patterns: It traces drug use patterns over time, unlike tests that only detect recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection of recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair around 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair tests usually cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite levels in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and growth rate differences between individuals.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Wabasso, MN

Hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests, especially when accuracy and reliability are prioritized. Unlike urine analysis, hair testing provides a more extensive detection window, capturing substance usage that might go unnoticed otherwise. This comprehensive insight is highly prized by employers and legal entities alike.

Furthermore, the superior accuracy of hair testing reduces the likelihood of false negatives, an issue that can be prevalent with urine tests. This ensures that employers can implement strict drug-free policies effectively, supporting a safer and compliant working environment.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
