At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer hair follicle drug testing solutions in Wahkon, Minnesota. Whether you need to test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing ensures top-notch service, with facilities across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the scalp or body for testing. Hair samples can be checked for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in recent years and are now often chosen over traditional urine tests by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. Designed for employers with strict drug-use policies, courts, and probationary individuals, the hair test offers a detection period of up to 90 days. Unlike urine tests, hair tests are almost foolproof due to their observed collection but are less effective for identifying drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair samples are easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, equals 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing. For EtG, supplemental tests, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of hair is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Testing in the lab involves primarily four processes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab's system, ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any extra data not captured electronically.

Screening is an initial, rapid test for drugs. While Screening is a cost-effective way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, positive screens need confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples with presumptive positive results from Screening require further confirmation.

For presumptive positives in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the specimen for further processing. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from the hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral liquids), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

Positive Screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to circumvent, providing more reliable results.
  • Delivers historical usage data: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand that is tested, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
