In Wales, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair or alcohol drug test, we are experts in hair testing with centers across all cities nationwide to administer the test. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for analysis. Our hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent in recent years, often replacing standard urine tests. This method is favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as courts and probation officers. It offers a longer detection period of up to 90 days and involves an observed collection process that makes it hard to manipulate. Nonetheless, for monitoring substance use within the last five days, urine tests remain the preferred option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair gives an extensive timeline of substance use by preserving biomarkers within the fiber of the emerging hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair can yield approximately a 3-month detection period for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hairs, comparable to a #2 pencil's size, adjacent to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additions, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of head hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair denotes hair strictly from the scalp. In contrast, body hair signifies other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system, which includes checking the integrity and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any pending data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs. While cost-effective for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated for legal acceptability. Positive results in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation procedure.

For samples presumptively positive at Screening, additional hair is taken from the sample for Extraction. In this process, drug elements are separated from hair at lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive specimens undergo cleansing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is reviewed according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments identify drug use over a 90-day span, as opposed to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is difficult, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Reveal usage patterns: It offers a timeline of drug use, not limited to recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to detect recent use: Drugs only become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often pricier than other testing modalities.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Wales, MN, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in several ways. While urine tests are limited to detecting recent drug use, hair testing offers a superior detection accuracy that reaches up to 90 days. This longer detection window provides a more comprehensive view of an individual's drug use history.

Extended Detection Window

In Wales, MN, hair follicle testing is prized for its extended detection window, detecting substances consumed up to 90 days prior. This capability grants employers invaluable insight into an individual's long-term drug use, surpassing the limitations of urine testing, which is constrained to a much shorter look-back period.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Wales, MN, greatly diminish the chances of sample tampering, presenting a reliable option for authentic results. The difficulty of adulterating a hair sample, as opposed to a urine sample, elevates the trustworthiness of hair testing, ensuring its results remain unquestioned and valid for crucial decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
