In Walker, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a drug or alcohol screening through hair samples, our expertise in hair testing is accessible through numerous nationwide centers. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. Hair tests can assess the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made hair testing options.

Over the past years, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in drug detection practices. Many workplaces, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal entities, and probationary individuals often rely on these tests. Hair testing's key advantage is its extended 90-day detection period, secure collection, and near-impossibility of tampering, although urine tests remain most effective for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained recognition as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By incorporating biomarkers into the fibers of the developing hair strand, hair provides an extended account of drug and alcohol use. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol presence for a period approaching three months. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A section of hair measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equates to 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and verification. To test for EtG, additional substances, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg is the advisable quantity. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair might be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a laboratory drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a lab's framework. This step confirms the sample was adequately sealed and transported, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and fulfills any outstanding data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening comprises an expedited check for illicit substances. Although Screening is an economical strategy to dismiss drug usage in most cases, a subsequent Confirmation is necessary for any positive result to be legally acceptable. Every sample that tests presumptively positive in Screening must go through a secondary Confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is withdrawn from the original sample for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at a lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are utilized for verifying any presumptively positive screening results. Presumptive positive samples are washed prior to Confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug intake for a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which cover a shorter window.
  • Difficult to deceive: Altering the outcome of a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical information: It provides a chronological record of drug usage over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become visible in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the level of drug metabolites present.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination pertains to the hair strand rather than the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
