Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Watertown, Minnesota. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in hair testing, with centers in cities across the nation equipped to conduct such tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of your head, or body hair can be used. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing needs.

The trend of drug testing has increasingly gravitated towards hair follicle drug tests in recent years. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations and entities with strict no-drug policies, as well as individuals under probation. The primary advantage is a longer detection timeframe, up to 90 days, making the test hard to tamper with. For detecting recent use, within 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-lasting record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective technique for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to hold up in legal proceedings. Samples that show presumptive positive results in Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as deemed necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection window.
  • Challenge to cheat: It is quite challenging to cheat on a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical data: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Watertown, MN, surpasses urine testing by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. The extended detection window allows for a detailed analysis of substance use history that urine tests often miss due to their shorter detection timeline.

By choosing hair follicle testing, employers and individuals benefit from a method that is not only nearly impossible to cheat but also provides a broader and more precise assessment of substance use compared to the limitations of traditional urine testing.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Watertown, MN, find hair follicle testing invaluable due to its extended detection window, which allows for monitoring drug use for up to 90 days. This prolonged period gives a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history, aiding in informed decision-making.

The ability to track drug use over a few months offers a more complete picture of an employee's or applicant's habits, ensuring that decisions are based on extensive evidence rather than short-term behavior shifts, which increases workplace safety and integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
