Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Wilson, Minnesota. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our specialty in this field is unmatched, with testing locations across the nation ready to conduct these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair can be used. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other analyses.

Recently, hair follicle tests have gained prevalence in drug screening. Organizations, judicial systems, and substance experts increasingly opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, legal bodies, and probationers utilize hair tests. Its main advantage is its extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, making it secure and virtually foolproof. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be acquired. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to dismiss drug usage in the majority of samples, a screen that turns out positive needs confirmation for court acceptance. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus making the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Results variability: Factors including hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests," the test itself analyzes the hair strand, rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability in Wilson, MN. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests provide a more extensive overview of an individual's drug use over a prolonged period, enhancing detection efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
