In Woodland, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available throughout the United States. It typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing requirements.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for substance detection. Employers, judicial systems, and substance professionals often opt for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are ideal for employers with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and those on probation. They offer extended detection periods, usually up to 90 days, are securely collected, and are nearly foolproof. Urine tests, however, are still the best for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as the hair grows. Hair samples collected near the scalp offer an approximate detection period of up to 3 months for drugs and alcohol. The collection process is straightforward, is somewhat resistant to tampering, and facilitates simple shipping.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred amount for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or beyond 10-panel tests, 150mg of hair is advisable. Use a jeweler's scale for precise weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing stages for drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into a lab’s system. This involves ensuring proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a quick preliminary assessment for substance abuse. While cost-efficient for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives in Screening need secondary authentication.

Should a sample test presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

The Confirmation of positive screening results is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The end-to-end laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Tracks usage history: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair following use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite levels in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
