Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Aberdeen, Mississippi. Whether a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with testing centers located in every city across the nation capable of conducting hair tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is generally required. Hair tests may be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other testing options.

Lately, drug testing methods have increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests cater to employers with strict drug-free workplace policies, courts, and probation officers. A major advantage of hair follicle testing is the extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, with the sample collection being observed, thus ensuring it is virtually cheat-proof. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, a urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has emerged as an influential technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and illicit substances by securing biomarkers within the strands of the developing hair fiber. When clipped close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month observation window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat tough to alter, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is unobtainable, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four steps entailed in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial handling of a specimen into a lab’s protocol. This entails affirming the specimen was securely sealed and sent correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening involves an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Though Screening is an economically viable method to exclude drug usage across most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court acceptability. Any specimens flagged as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

If a specimen shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is gathered from the initial sample and set for Extraction. At this phase, substances are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration than other techniques (eg., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine assessments which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug assessment is considerably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It delivers a trend of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are usually pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
