Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Banks, Mississippi. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we have facilities across all U.S. cities for conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is necessary for testing. This method can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific analyses.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has gained prominence as a drug testing method. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, legal settings, and monitoring probationers. Its primary advantage lies in its longer detection window, lasting up to 90 days, and its secure collection process, making cheating virtually impossible. Conversely, urine tests remain most effective for identifying recent usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a prolonged record of substance use by storing biomarkers within the fiber of the hair as it grows. When clipped near the scalp, hair can show evidence of drug use, including alcohol, for up to roughly 3 months. The collection process is straightforward, with a low risk of tampering, and the samples are easy to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing approximately 200 strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides around 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. If testing for EtG, add-ons, or more than ten panels, then 150mg is preferred. It’s advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample by a laboratory, including checking the sample’s seal and shipping status, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing entries not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary swift check for drug abuse indicators. While it’s a cost-effective approach for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation before it is legally valid. Any potentially positive samples from Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample indicates a positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This step involves isolating drug compounds from the hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing one of the most challenging methods to perform.

Verification of any positive screening outcome involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All potentially positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accession to Confirmation is scrutinized under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the standards for ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more dependable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a usage pattern over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing usually costs more than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result disparity: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
