Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Banner, Mississippi. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, boasting collection sites in cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, hair length must be 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair analysis options.

In recent times, drug screening methods have leaned more towards utilizing hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are mandating hair tests over conventional urine screenings. Businesses enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as courts and individuals under probation, often opt for these. The major advantage of hair testing is the extended detection window, capturing up to 90 days of drug use, with minimal chance of manipulation, despite urine tests being the better choice for identifying recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term indicators of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers into the strands of developing hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use for about a 3-month period. It's easy to gather, fairly resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other hair varieties (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s system. This step entails confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substance use. While cost-effective in the majority of cases, a Screening positive must be verified to be valid in court proceedings. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening require follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Any positive Screening outcomes undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive are cleansed before Confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the dual oversight of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which feature a shorter detection duration.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are notoriously difficult to falsify, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It can disclose drug use trends over time rather than recent consumption only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs only become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally involve higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine tests in Banner, MS, it's clear that hair testing surpasses in detection and reliability. While urine tests detect recent use, hair tests reveal drug history over months.

The ability of hair tests to showcase an extended detection period provides employers and professionals with a comprehensive understanding, making decisions based on more than just recent drug activity.

Extended Detection Window

In Banner, MS, hair follicle testing stands out due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days. This prolonged timeframe grants insight into a substance use history well beyond what other tests can offer.

Employers benefit from understanding long-term habits rather than isolated incidents, which in turn helps in better evaluating the reliability and character of candidates or employees over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
