Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Barr, Mississippi. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, and has facilities throughout the country to administer a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, sourced from the crown or elsewhere. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing needs.

Hair follicle tests have become a more common choice for drug screenings in recent times. More employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers use hair follicle tests due to their extended detection period for drugs, typically up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making them difficult to manipulate. However, for detection within a recent 5 days, urine tests are still the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair locks in biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, offering a comprehensive history of use. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol intake over a timespan of up to roughly 90 days. Hair is easy to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, supplements, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to use 150mg of the specimen. It is suggested to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s balance. In case scalp hair isn't present, a comparable volume of body hair can be secured. By head hair, we mean solely scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (beard, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially integrated into a laboratory’s framework. This step checks that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any further data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid analysis for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive outcome in screening necessitates verification to be acceptable in court. Any samples marked as indicatively positive in Screening must undergo a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is sourced from the initial collection and set for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at notably low concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), presenting hair drug testing as a highly challenging technique.

Confirming any positive Screening finding is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criterion and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug examination can identify drug usage up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers past data: It showcases drug usage trends over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Barr, MS
Hair testing proves superior by offering exceptional accuracy and reliability in substance detection, compared to urine tests. The benefits of choosing hair analysis over more traditional methods are evident in its ability to identify long-term drug usage efficiently.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
